King Salman bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Riyadh was one of the prioritized hospitals to be included within the health system transformation program of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Ministry of Health (MoH) decided to renovate/expand King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Hospital, in order to improve the scale and scope of services, as well as the overall quality of care at this facility.
For this purpose, the MoH sought assistance of a specialized consulting firm in assessing the current situation in King Salman bin Abdulaziz Hospital and determining renovation and/or capacity expansion requirements by focusing on the healthcare needs in the surrounding region.
As the sole advisor to the MoH in this project, Enera conducted field visits to various healthcare facilities in Riyadh, assessed regional supply-demand gaps, evaluated the land, infrastructure, resources and services of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Hospital, estimated optimal capacity levels, proposed changes in the scope of services and structure of the expansion project, and identified potential business models that could be used to commission the new facility. These activities resulted in two deliverables, namely a needs assessment report and an expansion strategy report.

The needs assessment report we prepared in this project provided essential information to the client that was previously unavailable, such as evidence on specialty-based healthcare gaps in the region and root causes of bottlenecks in the hospital’s operations. On the other hand, the expansion strategy we developed was used fruitfully by the Ministry of Health and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Hospital administration to guide the expansion efforts and improve the quality and efficiency of existing services in an informed fashion.
