King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC) in Riyadh is one of the most important public healthcare providers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In alignment with the national Vision 2030, KSUMC decided in 2018 to carry out a transformation program with the aim of achieving improvements in seven strategic areas. In order to structure the transformation program in an informed way, KSUMC tasked Enera for an assessment study that focused on various operational and functional aspects of medical and non-medical services.
Our work in the initial phase of this study included fieldwork in all three hospitals of the medical city, namely King Khalid University Hospital, King Abdulaziz University Hospital and Dental University Hospital. This phase comprised quantitative data collection from key departments of the hospitals and interviews with healthcare professionals. Building on the primary data collected and employing comparisons with international benchmarks, we systematically assessed diagnostic, outpatient, inpatient and surgery services, evaluated productivity and utilization levels, and identified root causes of existing inefficiencies and operational bottlenecks. Then, we developed a set of actionable recommendations on optimizing resources and increasing efficiency of services provided by KSUMC.

The comprehensive mapping of various operational and functional challenges in KSUMC’s three hospitals, as well as practical recommendations to overcome them, have been essential inputs for subsequent transformation initiatives of KSUMC. Furthermore, the hospitals have been able to achieve efficiency gains based on the outcomes of this project.
